Task 4b: Performing a Gradual Upgrade
Point 4. Upgrade using STSADM. The format of the XML file is incorrect. See Penny Coventry's blog Gradual Migration using STSADM and information on Microsoft's TechNet site http://technet2.microsoft.com/Office/en-us/library/94c49b6d-527e-4387-9557-8cfe8b55ede91033.mspx.
867 Task 4c: Performing a Content Database Migration,

Step by Step instructions on how to complete a SharePoint Server (SPS) 2003 migration to SharePoint Server (MOSS) 2007 can be found at the following links.

Scenario: To migrate a SPS 2003 portal that consists of three SQL Server databases: Outofthe1_SITE, Outofthe1_PROF and Outofthe1_SERV. The Outofthe1_SITE database contains the site collections for both the portal and all the My Site site collections. SharePoint Server 2007 is already installed on a machine and basic services configured. The new portal will have a URL of http://obe once it is migrated.

The content database migration consists of the following steps:

  1. Copy and Attach two SPS 2003 SQL databases: _SITE and _PROF, do not attach _SERV - ensure you run prescan before you do this.
  2. Create DNS Entries for http://obe
  3. Create two Web applications:
    a) one for the site collections, in this example it is the content database that contains the portal and all the My Sites site collections.
    b) one for the new SSP, which will be created from the _PROF database.

Do not create any site collections at this time. You MUST also delete the database that was created for the Web application for the portal content database.

  4. Upgrade the content database - in our scenario we only have one: Outofthe1_SITE. You would repeat this step for each content database you have
  5. Upgrade the Profile database (Outofthe1_PROF)
  6. Check
