Dedicated WFE Server for Indexing
When you dedicate a WFE server for indexing, be aware that SharePoint will automatically add entries to your Index Server's local HOSTS file for each content source that resolves to the IP address of your WFE server. This can cause significant, unexpected results. Please see Daniel Webster's blog post about this.
Findability
There is a marketing concept called "The Long Tail" which Arpan Shaw has blogged about. However, he is not alone in noticing this phenomena. There is a book with the same title and a web site which has grown out of that book. In order for something to be findable, it must have metadata that is discriminatory in nature and effective at helping people find individual items among a sea of items that are seldom accessed. This concept represents most of SharePoint, frankly. I would advise you folks to read this book and learn about the Long Tail.
Errata
On page 621, I wrote that there is "an implied OR for all queries". This is not correct. It should have read that there "is an implied AND for all queries".
